Chainsaw Safety Gear: What You Actually Need

Do not fire up a chainsaw without proper PPE. We explain every piece of essential safety gear, what STIHL offers, and why each item could save your life.

Helmet with Visor and Hearing Protection

A chainsaw helmet is non-negotiable. Falling branches, kickback, and noise all pose immediate threats. STIHL helmets combine a hard outer shell, metal mesh or polycarbonate face visor, and integrated ear muffs rated for chainsaw noise levels. The visor protects against chips and debris while the ear muffs reduce noise exposure below the damage threshold.

Make sure the helmet fits snugly with the chin strap fastened. A loose helmet can shift during critical moments and obstruct your vision. Replace the helmet if it sustains an impact — even if no crack is visible, the internal foam may be compromised.

Cut-Resistant Chaps and Pants

STIHL cut-resistant chaps use multiple layers of specialized fibers designed to tangle and jam a moving chainsaw chain on contact. They do not make you invincible, but they buy you critical seconds to react and shut down the saw. Chaps are worn over regular pants and strap securely at the waist and lower legs.

For professional users, STIHL offers full cut-resistant pants with the protective weave built directly into the garment. These are more comfortable for all-day wear and provide consistent coverage regardless of how you move. Homeowners should at minimum invest in a quality pair of chaps — they cost far less than an emergency room visit.

Gloves and Boots

Chainsaw gloves need to balance protection with dexterity. STIHL gloves feature reinforced palms, cut-resistant back-of-hand padding, and secure wrist closures. You need to feel the controls clearly, so avoid overly bulky gloves. Replace gloves when the palm material wears thin or the padding compresses.

Steel-toe boots with ankle support and aggressive tread are essential. Chainsaw work happens on uneven ground, slippery logs, and loose brush. STIHL safety boots include cut-resistant instep protection and oil-resistant soles. Never operate a chainsaw in sneakers, sandals, or worn-out work boots. Your footing is your foundation.
