STIHL Hedge Trimmer Maintenance: Blade Sharpening Guide

A dull hedge trimmer tears leaves instead of cutting them, leaving your hedges brown and ragged. Learn how to clean, sharpen, and lubricate your STIHL blades properly.

Cleaning the Blades

Before sharpening, the blades must be completely clean. Sap, resin, and plant debris accumulate quickly and harden into a film that accelerates corrosion and dulls the cutting edges. Spray the blades with a degreaser or soapy water and scrub with a stiff brush. Pay special attention to the teeth valleys where debris packs tightly.

For stubborn resin buildup, soak a cloth in white vinegar or a commercial blade cleaner and wrap it around the blade for 10 minutes before scrubbing. Dry the blades thoroughly with a clean rag. Never sharpen blades while debris is still lodged between teeth — the file will skate over the residue and create an uneven edge.

Sharpening Technique

STIHL hedge trimmer blades are double-sided with each tooth offset slightly. Use a flat file that matches the tooth width — typically a 6-inch mill file works well for most models. File each tooth with the same number of strokes, maintaining the original factory bevel angle. Counting strokes ensures uniform sharpness across the entire blade.

Work in one direction only, pushing the file away from you and lifting it on the return stroke. Do not saw back and forth — this rounds the edge rather than sharpening it. After filing, run a fine sharpening stone or ceramic rod lightly along each edge to remove the burr that forms on the back side of the tooth.

Lubrication and Storage

After cleaning and sharpening, apply STIHL resin solvent or a light machine oil to the blade surfaces. This prevents corrosion and reduces sap adhesion during the next use. Run the trimmer briefly to distribute the oil along the moving parts. Wipe away any excess before storing.

Store hedge trimmers horizontally or hanging by the handle — never rest weight on the blades. For cordless models, remove the battery before storage. Gas models should be drained of fuel or treated with stabilizer if stored longer than 30 days. Cover the blades with the STIHL blade guard to protect the edges and prevent accidental contact.
