Mulching vs Bagging: Lawn Mower Setting Guide
Should you mulch clippings back into the lawn or bag them for disposal? The answer depends on grass height, season, and your lawn's health. We explain both methods.
Mulching Benefits and Technique
Mulching returns nitrogen and organic matter to the soil, reducing fertilizer needs by up to 25%. The key is cutting frequently enough that clippings are short — ideally under 1 inch. Long clippings clump on the lawn surface, blocking sunlight and creating dead patches. STIHL mulching kits include a specialized blade with multiple cutting edges that recirculate clippings under the deck until they are pulverized into fine particles.
Mulching works best when the grass is dry and you are removing no more than one-third of the blade height. Wet grass clumps regardless of how sharp the blade is. In peak growing season during spring and early summer, mulching is the default choice for healthy lawns. The fine particles settle into the turf within hours and decompose within days, feeding the root zone.
When to Bag Instead
Bagging is necessary when the grass has grown excessively tall between cuts — typically after vacation or heavy rain periods that prevented mowing. Removing long clippings prevents thatch buildup and smothering. Bagging is also the better choice when the lawn is diseased; mulching spreads fungal spores and pathogens across the entire yard via contaminated clippings.
During fall leaf season, bagging becomes practical when leaf volume exceeds what the mower can mulch effectively. A thick layer of mulched leaves can mat down and block spring growth. Some homeowners alternate — mulching regular clippings during the growing season and bagging during heavy leaf drop or the final mow before winter. STIHL mowers with quick-change chutes make switching between modes fast.
Blade and Deck Setup
Mulching blades have a more aggressive lift and additional cutting surfaces than standard discharge blades. They create a strong vacuum under the deck that holds clippings in the cutting chamber longer. Standard blades used for mulching produce poor results — the clippings are too coarse and eject before being fully processed. If you mulch regularly, invest in a dedicated mulching blade or kit from STIHL designed for your specific mower model.
The deck must be clean for effective mulching. A deck caked with old grass clippings disrupts airflow and prevents the recirculation pattern that mulching depends on. Scrape the deck clean at least twice per season and check that the mulching plug or baffle is properly seated. A loose baffle allows clippings to escape before being fully cut, defeating the purpose of the mulching setup.
