STIHL Battery System: AP vs AK Batteries Explained

Confused about STIHL's battery lineup? We break down the AP professional system, the AK homeowner system, compatibility, and which battery fits your tools.

The AP System: Built for Professionals

The AP battery system is STIHL's professional-grade platform, designed for users who demand maximum runtime and power output. AP batteries come in capacities ranging from 150 Wh up to 500 Wh, with the flagship AP 500 S delivering exceptional energy density and fast charging capability. These batteries use premium lithium-ion cells with active cooling to prevent overheating during demanding tasks.

Tools in the AP system include commercial-grade chainsaws, professional hedge trimmers, high-torque brush cutters, and backpack blowers. If you run a landscaping business or maintain a large property, the AP system is worth the investment. The batteries are heavier than AK units, but the runtime and tool compatibility justify the weight for serious users.

The AK System: Perfect for Homeowners

The AK battery system targets residential users who want cordless convenience without the premium price of the professional line. AK batteries are lighter, more compact, and integrate seamlessly with STIHL's homeowner tool range including compact chainsaws, grass trimmers, and small blowers. Capacities range from 36 Wh to 180 Wh.

The key advantage of AK is convenience. These batteries slide into tools from the top or rear and lock securely with an audible click. For suburban homeowners who trim edges, blow leaves, and occasionally cut small branches, an AK 20 or AK 30 battery provides enough runtime to complete an entire yard session on a single charge.

Compatibility and Charging

AP batteries require the AL 300 or AL 500 charger, while AK batteries use the AL 101 charger. You cannot charge an AP battery on an AK charger or vice versa. However, STIHL offers adapter solutions that let you run select AK tools with AP batteries using the AP adapter, giving homeowners a future upgrade path.

Charging times vary by battery capacity and charger model. The AL 500 rapid charger can bring an AP 300 S to 80% capacity in under 30 minutes. For AK batteries, the AL 101 takes about 90 minutes for a full charge. We recommend owning at least two batteries so you can rotate between charging and working without interruption.
